Just from the changing of the name from "DualShock" to "DualSense" gets you thinking on why maintaining the same type of controller with updated features, changing this to a name that indicates sensing something, so this got me very curious but still i expected that iconic "DualShock" look from the 90´s until today.
The turning point for a new era, the PlayStation has unveiled technical specs for the new System the PlayStation 5 and now announced the new type of controller for the first time to the world, besides being led to believe that game developers are already familiar with it. This far we know that this controller is supposed to play on our senses in conjunction with the "Tempest 3D Audio Tech", thus creating a new immersion to players.

Back in 2013, when the DualShock 4 was introduced, it introduced players to new features like the "Share" button, being referenced as the best PlayStation controller of that time. So this time around they had to build upon the reputation and the success this line of controllers saw along the years.
Playstation maintained what players loved from the DualShock 4 while adding new functions and for the first time a more boldly new design leaving the iconic look of the previous generations behind.

In collaboration with game developers they want to bring immersion to gaming focusing on the new functions of the controller, by heightening feelings and sensations. Even triggers and actuators are there to further the sensation.
Here are a few examples:
Slow grittiness of driving a car trough mud
they incorporated adaptive triggers into the L2 & R2 buttons allowing you to feel more tension in that particular moment of the game.
The design:
Fitting everything players loved from generations past and all the new components without giving it a bulky look and feel, while making it look smaller than it actually is and ways to maintain a strong battery life was very important. It had to be very light as well.
The starting point was thinking of this, going in the making of the hardware it self, it had to fit in the controller of course, all done trough clever design.
Buttons and functions:
Gone is the "Share" button, in comes the "Create" button but knowing what the differences are is still to soon to tell, as they will clarify closer to the lunch of the PlayStation 5.
L2 & R2 buttons are turned in to adaptive triggers.
Built-in microphone array for chatting without a headset. You can of course use a headset if you want to.
Colors:
Up until now, the base controllers had a single color, but that has changed this time around as well. This time the base controller comes with a two toned design.
Mockups:
Various concepts and mockups were tested and changed before settling on this final design. The controller has been tested by a wide range of gamers with different hand sizes.
Finally i would like to leave you with a statement by President & CEO Jim Ryan delivered to the PlayStation community:
"We are thrilled about sharing the final look of the DualSense controller with our fans, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it!

DualSense marks a radical departure from our previous controller offerings and captures just how strongly we feel about making a generational leap with PS5. The new controller, along with the many innovative features in PS5, will be transformative for games – continuing our mission at PlayStation to push the boundaries of play, now and in the future. To the PlayStation community, I truly want to thank you for sharing this exciting journey with us as we head toward PS5’s launch in Holiday 2020. We look forward to sharing more information about PS5, including the console design, in the coming months.” – Jim Ryan, President & CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment
Last but not least i cant help but think of "Astro Bot", the new controller and this game caracter have the same colors or aesthetics witch leads me to another thought... will the PS5 have this kind of color scheme or esthetics design? will we have a new PSVR? I guess we will know later on.
